Old Fashioned

INGREDIENTS

4,5 cl bourbon or rye whiskey

1 spoon syrop or sugar cube

2 dashes Angostura bitter

METHOD

Shake

GLASS

Roks

Garnish

Fresh orange zest and / or cocktail cherry

Add bourbon or rye whiskey, plain syrup and Angostura to the glass (old fashion or rock). Add a large cube of ice (several large pieces will do) and mix the ingredients well with a bar spoon. Squeeze the orange zest into a glass (so that the zest oil gets into the cocktail), then grease the rim of the glass with it.  Decorate the cocktail with fresh orange zest (and the one you have already used) and / or cocktail cherry.

The origin of the Old Fashioned cocktail

The Old Fashioned cocktail is called “Old fashioned Whiskey Cocktail”. This beverage with character, very popular in the 1960s, is still in fashion. Old Fashioned is believed to have been created in 1884 by a retired officer named James E. Pepper, who also owned a brand of bourbon. He created it with the bartender of the “Pendennis” club in Louisville, Kentucky. During Prohibition in 1928, it took its current form and its recipe was simplified. Today, the Old Fashioned cocktail even gave the whiskey glass its name: the Old Fashioned Glass.

The ingredients of Old Fashioned

The real Old Fashioned recipe like the one here is based on American bourbon or therefore whiskey. As a reminder, in the United States, bourbon and rye whiskey are produced from mixtures of grains (corn, rye, and barley most of the time) and come from a double distillation.

The Old Fashioned recipe

At first glance, the recipe for the Old Fashioned cocktail may seem simple. However, controlling the dilution during the preparation of Old Fashioned remains a step to be managed with care so that your cocktail is neither too “alcoholic” nor too “floaty”.

Old Fashioned variations

Double Old Fashioned, or even Old Fashioned with rum, Old Fashioned with gin and Old Fashioned with tequila: the variations of the Old Fashioned cocktail are numerous! In particular, it is possible to add a dose of cold-brewed coffee to this legendary cocktail to obtain an Old Fashioned Coffee. Or to opt for an Irish whiskey (distilled three times and not twice as for American whiskey) to make an Irish Old Fashioned.
